WORKING IN LISBON D9: Day before my Birthday

The day before my birthday, coinciding with my employer's grand BBQ for the entire company, I've committed to having dinner with the Vitoria boys. It's their end-of-season dinner with the club president. For 15 euros, you get a 4-course menu featuring traditional Portuguese cuisine. It's dawning on me now that I'm not just dining with the locals of Portugal, but also with the hooligans/ultras of Vitoria FC. It's a tremendous honor to be invited to this.

As always, I end up running late, but the Portuguese are accustomed to it. Two lads from Vitoria pick me up at the station, casually dressed, and lead me to the spot where they're beginning their dinner. There are five long tables teeming with locals reveling in the camaraderie, food, and drinks. Singing and drinking are the order of the evening. What a spirited bunch. Club flags hang everywhere, and the colors of green and white radiate throughout the room.

Strangely, I feel at home with these guys. After dinner, they delve into retrospectives and the club's future prospects. Awards are presented to members who've contributed significantly to the club. They're serenaded, and perhaps most impressively, when the club president delivers his speech, everyone is captivated and silence reigns.

Once the speeches conclude and the tables are cleared, everyone congregates outside, gathering flares and smoke bombs. A flare and a smoke bomb are placed in my hands, and before I know it, they're singing their anthems, igniting the flares, and setting off the smoke bombs, all accompanied by fireworks and strobe lights.

After an unplanned evening, we decide to procure the necessary alcohol from the late-night shop. Five of us stroll along, amassing three bottles of vodka and two bottles of juice for mixing. We rendezvous at the stadium and continue the party with booming speakers, beer, and a plethora of pyrotechnics. The atmosphere is electric; I just fetched that bottle ten minutes ago, and I'm already in another world. The police show up in a riot control bus to issue warnings: 1) lower the music and 2) cut out the pyrotechnics. Just lovely.

I'm tapped on the shoulder, and they wish me a happy birthday. They sing for me, form a circle around me, and hand me a flare to celebrate. This is my family in Portugal, always as welcome as I have been with them. They've earned my complete respect. I'd do anything for them.

Deciding to wrap things up at the stadium due to police presence, we relocate to Moita. The town has transformed into a festival, resembling a sort of King's Day celebration. Stages with DJs and food stalls are everywhere. We revel in the bottles of alcohol, the necessary medicine, and of course, the camaraderie. Well beyond intoxicated, we move from tent to tent, igniting pyrotechnics in the midst of the crowd, eventually catching the attention of law enforcement. In our final tent, they play mellow reggae to help us sober up a bit.

After a night of intense revelry, I find myself in my haven early in the morning. I haven't even had a chance to check my phone, and my eyes are already drooping. Though I still miss plenty about the people I've temporarily left behind in the Netherlands, I'm determined to relish everything around me. The feeling of being at home in an unfamiliar place takes some getting used to. Ultimately, it all comes down to you, your perspective, and your behavior. You can't blame your emotions for your actions, but you can attribute your actions to the emotions they evoke. Acting with the intention of making positive progress leads to positive emotions, fostering a positive outlook. Conversely, if you act in ways that surrender to negativity and create a downward spiral in your thoughts, you'll inevitably summon that negativity.

Remember, your emotions are largely shaped by your mindset. Therefore, always stay positive; only then will you truly realize your strength.

Just to clarify a few things about my posts: I'm doing my best to convey everything as accurately as possible, though my grammar might not always be on point. The date beneath the title indicates when I'm releasing the post. The day title corresponds to the day I'm writing about. I hope this helps you understand how my process works a bit better
